When can you start at Walden, and does it matter?

Walden offers start dates each quarter, typically four intakes a year. Graduate courses then run eleven weeks and open every twelve. That is fewer entry points than schools running monthly starts, so if your timing is driven by an employer deadline or a licence renewal, the calendar is worth checking before you assume you can begin whenever you are ready.

Four doors a year, not twelve

Some online schools start every month. Walden does not, and the difference matters more at the end of a programme than the beginning: everything downstream sits on the same quarterly rhythm, including the practicum courses.

So a delay does not cost you a few weeks. It costs you a quarter, and the next opportunity is a full term away.

The interaction nobody plans for

Practicum site approval runs on its own clock in Meditrek, and Walden's guidance is to submit a request at least two months before the practicum application deadline or the site's own deadline, whichever comes first.

Work backwards from that and the real planning date is well before your start date, not after it. Nurses who begin the preceptor search in the term they need one are already late, regardless of when they enrolled.

When the start date genuinely matters

If an employer is funding you against a fiscal year, if you are timing a licence renewal, or if you are trying to finish before a known life event. In those cases count the terms rather than the months, and add one for contingency, because the twelve-week cycle is unforgiving of slippage.

When it does not

If your timeline is loose, waiting a quarter to start with your placement already arranged is almost always better than starting immediately and scrambling for a preceptor later. The start date is the least consequential decision on this page.

Common questions

How many start dates does Walden have?

Walden offers start dates each quarter, which is typically four intakes a year.

How long are Walden's graduate courses?

Eleven weeks, opening every twelve weeks, so the programme advances on a fixed quarterly cycle.

Should I wait to start until I have a preceptor?

Often yes. Because practicum approval runs on its own timeline and a missed term costs about twelve weeks, starting with a placement already arranged is usually better than starting sooner without one.
