Walden Student— an independent reading

We do not work for Walden. Nobody here is paid if you enrol, and we support working nurses across seventeen online programmes — which is the only reason we can afford to read this honestly.

Walden promises to find you a preceptor. Almost nobody reads the promise.

“If students have worked to identify their own site and preceptor but have been unsuccessful and meet the requirements, Walden's Practicum Pledge will match them with a site and preceptor.”
Walden University, Practicum Pledge

Four words carry that sentence: and meet the requirements. This page is the requirements, in full, in Walden's own words — and what each one will cost you if you meet it late.

Ask before you enrol

Tell us where you would do clinical hours and we will check it against Walden’s restricted list. Free, no obligation, usually the same day.

Your details reach this practice only. They never go to Walden.

How far is Walden allowed to send you?

The Pledge buys certainty by reserving the right to place you at a distance. Its stated radius is a hundred miles, and the policy allows further where providers are scarce.

So the honest question is not whether you would prefer somewhere close. It is what you could still be doing in week nine of a term, in February, after a run of nights.

25miles each way

Why this is a term, not a preference

Declining a match Walden offers ends Walden’s obligation under the Pledge. You get one.

Which makes the distance you can genuinely sustain a condition of the agreement rather than a wish — and far better decided now, while it is still hypothetical.

Hours are modelled at a 45 mph average over two practicum days a week, across one eleven-week term. Walden's policy states greater distances may be necessary in areas with a low supply of healthcare providers, so treat 100 miles as the stated figure rather than the ceiling.

The requirements, in Walden's words and ours

Left column is quoted from Walden's published practicum guidance. Right column is what we have watched it mean for nurses actually inside the programme.

Before the Pledge applies, a student must complete a coaching call with a Field Placement Coordinator before the registration deadline, and finish all professional preparation tasks the coordinator assigns.

Practicum Pledge, eligibility

A student must obtain denials from at least five qualifying sites or preceptors, on signed letterhead or a work-issued email address. Personal email accounts are not accepted, and an administrator's signature is required.

Practicum Pledge, eligibility

Walden may match a student to a site that requires travel by the student of up to 100 miles, and greater distances may be necessary in areas with a low supply of providers. A match may require multiple sites and preceptors.

Practicum Pledge, conditions of a match

The student may not be matched for the term that the student requests. Any change in student status, including failure of a practicum prerequisite or a leave of absence, may require re-registration for the Pledge.

Practicum Pledge, conditions of a match

Walden's obligation ends if the student declines the match, fails to complete site onboarding requirements, has a preceptor cancel due to a student policy violation, or does not successfully complete the course.

Practicum Pledge, termination

What a slipped term actually costs

Walden charges by the credit against a fixed calendar rather than by subscription, so delay converts directly into tuition. Credit totals differ by specialisation: Family NP runs 58 credits on BSN entry and 84 on the bridge, Psychiatric-Mental Health 63 and 89.

Coursework, on planFamily NP, 58 credits at the commonly published per-credit rate, before fees and books~$28,100
Time, on planEleven-week courses opening every twelve weeks~27 months
One term missedThe Pledge may not match you for the term you request+12 weeks
Tuition that term carriesCredits you still have to take, simply taken later+$2,900

Credit counts and term structure are Walden's published figures. The per-credit rate is the commonly published one and moves by programme and intake, so treat these as order-of-magnitude rather than a quote, and confirm both the rate and which route you are being offered before you enrol — the RN-to-MSN path is nearly half as long again as the BSN-to-MSN path.

Is Walden the right school for you?

Five questions, answered honestly, and we will tell you plainly when the answer is no. We have no reason to push you here — one of the other sixteen programmes we work across will suit you if this one does not.

Question one of five

Where are you now?

Finding

    Put this to a person

Bring your own case to someone with no stake in where you enrol.

Twenty minutes, free, no obligation, and no one on this side earns anything whichever school you choose.

Whether the Pledge covers you at all
The Pledge names the tracks it covers, and Walden bars practicum outright in some states. We check both against the current lists first.
Preceptor supply where you actually live
The number that decides whether the five-denial clause ever becomes your problem. Usually answerable in one call.
Which route you are being quoted
58 credits or 84 — and which specialisation — changes your timeline and your total more than any discount you will be offered.
Whether a term calendar suits how you work
If it does not, we will say so and name the schools that fit you better.

    Arrange the call

One call. If it turns out not to be useful, that is where it ends.
