How many credits will Walden actually take?

Walden accepts up to 135 quarter credits toward an undergraduate programme, which is a fixed ceiling. For master's and doctoral programmes the limit is a proportion instead: no more than 50% of the programme's own requirements, with some Post-Master's Nurse Practitioner Certificates treated as an exception. On a 58-credit Family NP route that is 29 credits, worth roughly $14,000.

A number and a percentage are not the same rule

This is the part that catches people. Because the undergraduate cap is a fixed figure, it is natural to assume the graduate one is too, just smaller. It is not. It moves with the programme you enter.

The counter-intuitive consequence: a shorter graduate programme accepts fewer transfer credits, not more, because half of a smaller number is smaller.

Ceilings are not entitlements

The cap tells you the maximum Walden could take. What you are actually granted depends on whether your prior coursework maps onto specific requirements, judged on content rather than course titles. Nobody is awarded a full ceiling as a matter of routine.

Which is why an estimate offered in an enrolment conversation is not an evaluation. Ask for the assessment in writing, against your real transcripts.

Two traps worth knowing

Virginia has its own floor. Students residing in Virginia must complete a minimum of 55 credits through Walden for a Walden bachelor's, whatever the transfer ceiling would otherwise allow.

Quarter credits are not semester hours. Walden counts in quarter credits and many institutions count in semester hours; the two do not convert one to one. Comparing Walden's ceiling with another school's without converting first is the most common apples-to-oranges error in this whole decision.

Why this outranks a scholarship

Transfer credit is decided by paperwork you already possess, and on a graduate route it can be worth more than any discount or promotional rate you will be offered. It is also the factor most nurses assess last, having already chosen a school, by which point the answer can no longer change anything.

Common questions

How many credits does Walden accept in transfer?

Up to 135 quarter credits toward an undergraduate programme. For master's and doctoral programmes the limit is no more than 50% of the programme's own requirements, with some Post-Master's NP Certificates treated as an exception.

How many credits can I transfer into a Walden MSN?

On a 58-credit Family Nurse Practitioner route the ceiling is 29 credits, because the graduate cap is half the programme rather than a fixed number.

Does Walden use semester hours?

No. Walden counts in quarter credits, which do not convert one to one with semester hours, so comparisons with other schools should convert first.
