Can you use your own employer as a Walden practicum site?
Often yes, and it is usually the strongest option available to you. Three things have to line up: your employer must permit it, the site must hold or be willing to enter an affiliation agreement with Walden, and the preceptor must meet Walden's qualification requirements for your specialisation. None of those is automatic, and all three are testable before you apply.
Why this is the first question, not the last
Preceptor supply is the binding constraint in online nursing. If your own workplace can host you, most of the risk in any online programme disappears in a single conversation — and if it cannot, you have learned something that should shape which schools you are even considering.
Either answer is worth having before you pay an application fee.
The affiliation agreement is the hidden step
A willing preceptor is not sufficient. The site itself needs a contract in place with Walden. Meditrek holds a database of existing agreements, and a site already on that list is dramatically less work than one that is not.
Putting a new agreement in place takes time and is not guaranteed to succeed, because it requires the site's administration to agree rather than just your supervisor.
The preceptor has to qualify too
Walden sets requirements for who may precept, which vary by specialisation. A colleague willing to supervise you is not necessarily a colleague Walden will approve. Check the requirement for your track before you ask, so that you ask the right person.
How to ask well
Ask early, ask in writing, and ask for something specific: a named number of hours across a named term, with a named person. Vague enquiries get vague answers that evaporate when the term arrives.
And ask before you enrol. An employer who says yes turns your whole plan from hopeful to solid; one who says no has saved you from finding out in month fourteen.
Common questions
Can I do my Walden practicum where I work?
Often yes. Your employer must permit it, the site must hold an affiliation agreement with Walden, and the preceptor must meet Walden's qualification requirements for your specialisation.
What is an affiliation agreement?
It is the contract between Walden and a clinical site permitting students to complete practicum hours there. A willing preceptor is not enough on its own if the site has no agreement in place.
Where can I see which sites already have agreements with Walden?
Walden maintains an affiliation agreement database accessible through Meditrek, the system nursing students use for practicum applications.
